DAMIEN MEPPEM

GURLEY / NSW / ROUND 3

Damien Meppem oversees his livestock operation at Tyrone Pastoral Co at Gurley in North West NSW. He has been working there for the Carrigan family for 9 years now.

Damien, along with his wife Sam also run Wilwurk Kelpie Stud and have recently started a Sheep Scanning business.

The operation at Tyrone is based on native grass pastures and consists of a self-replacing merino flock of 5000 ewes, which includes a 300 head stud nucleus in which they use Top genetics through both AI and natural to breed flock rams. All their ewe lambs are classed with the tops kept as replacements and the wether lambs are finished in the feedlot.

The aim of being part of the Multimin Performance Ready Challenge is to see if Multimin has an economic benefit to his operation, through the following :

  1. Increasing conception rates and the number of ewes that conceive in the first cycle, by vaccinating pre-joining. This will give us greater potential for more lambs born and a more even saleable lines of lambs at weaning.
  2. Increasing lamb survivability, by vaccinating pre-lambing. This will increase our bottom line by getting more lambs from scanning to marking/weaning.
  3. Increasing overall fertility through a combination of the two above, thus leading to greater profitability in the business.
